If you service residential or light-commercial HVAC in the US, you are already charging A2L systems on real calls. R-454B split systems shipped in volume through 2025; R-454C mini-splits and heat pumps followed; R-32 ducted mini-splits are now standard on a meaningful share of installations. The AIM Act transition deadline is behind you. What is in front of you, every Monday through Saturday this summer, is a service truck that pulls up with a light-pink (R-454B) or light-salmon (R-454C) cylinder on the recovery machine instead of the pink R-410A cylinder your lead tech trained on. The question on every call is the same: are you setting up the job for A2L the same way you set up the last ten years of R-410A? If yes, you are doing something that lands a compliance alert on your customer's paperwork.
What an A2L is, in plain English
ASHRAE Standard 34 sorts refrigerants into safety classes based on toxicity and flammability. A1 (R-410A, R-22, R-134a, R-407C, R-404A, R-507A) is non-toxic and non-flammable at service conditions — the workhorse class the industry built its tooling, training, and recovery procedures around. A2Lis mildly flammable, with a lower flammability limit (LFL) around 0.300 kg/m³, and very low toxicity. The "L" in A2L is the key letter: low-burning-speed. An A2L refrigerant will not sustain a flame as easily as propane (R-290, A3) or isobutane (R-600a, A3), which is why ASHRAE decided A2Ls can replace R-410A in field-installed residential/light-commercial equipment with controlled charge sizes and ignition-source spacing — but not in a garage with an open water-heater flame two feet from the service port.
The replacements the field is actually charging today are R-454B (GWP 466, AHRI light-pink, ASHRAE A2L) for unitary split AC and heat pumps; R-454C (GWP 148, AHRI light-salmon, ASHRAE A2L) for ducted mini-splits, VRF indoor units, and some heat-pump platforms; R-32 (GWP 675, AHRI red, ASHRAE A2L) for ducted mini-splits from Daikin and Mitsubishi; and the HFOs R-1234yf and R-1234ze(E) (GWP 4 and 7, ASHRAE A2L) for commercial refrigeration and chiller applications. Five A2Ls that the service truck will see this year; one P/T chart that needs to cover all five.
The Phase 2 HFC allowance step-down (EPA's AIM Act allocations) and the DOE energy-efficiency rule on residential AC and heat pumps shipped together: the same unitary equipment that flipped to R-454B to stay inside its GWP budget also has higher SEER2/HSPF2 ratings this year, which moves the typical operating envelope higher on the suction line and changes the superheat targets your senior tech was trained on. A2L compliance and A2L-system performance are no longer separable problems on a service call.
What changes on a service call
UL 60335-2-40 (the standard the OEMs build to) tightens three things for A2L compared to A1: the leak-test pressure threshold, the ignition-source clearance around a refrigerant-containing component, and the refrigerant charge-size limit per occupied space. None of them are unmanageable, but they are non-negotiable on an A2L system:
- Leak check — qualified procedure. A2L systems over a certain charge must be leak-checked annually (or after any service that opens the refrigerant circuit) using a calibrated leak detector rated for A2L — not the soap-bubble kit you used on R-410A. The factory charging tolerance is tighter than the field tolerance on a calibrated detector, which is why the OEMs publish leak-check thresholds near 0.10 oz/yr.
- Ignition-source clearance. Open flame, hot surfaces above the autoignition temperature of the refrigerant, and arcing electrical contacts need to clear the compressor, evaporator coil, line set, and any service-port-adjacent component. New A2L equipment is designed for this with sealed compressors and internal fan-motor insulation; field service has to respect the same clearances when sweating a joint near a furnace vestibule.
- Recovery cylinder markings. An A2L cylinder is a distinct color and is marked for use with A2L refrigerants only. Do not mix A2L into a recovered-R-410A cylinder and do not pour A2L back into an A1 cylinder: cross-contamination changes the safety class of the blend in the cylinder, and disposal rules follow the worst classification present.
- PPE — the bar is set by the LFL, not by toxicity.A2L refrigerants are very low toxicity, so the respiratory PPE that matters on R-410A (high-GWP, non-flammable) is not what matters on R-454B. The bar on an A2L is flammability: no open flame near a vented cylinder, no ignition source near a leaking joint, and a calibrated A2L leak detector (rated to < 5 g/yr sensitivity for A2L) instead of a generic halogen tester.
The customer-facing piece of all this is paperwork. Each A2L service that opens the refrigerant circuit needs a documented leak-check pass, a refrigerant accountability entry (charge added, charge recovered, mass balance), and a record that the system is back inside the manufacturer's charge tolerance. The HVAC companies that we see bringing this in cleanly are doing it inside their dispatch software, not on a paper clipboard.
Charge math didn't change. Your P/T chart should.
Saturation physics is the same physics. What changed is the refrigerant you read off the gauge at the service port. R-454B at 75 °F saturation reads about 220 psig — close enough to R-410A that a tech who ignores the cylinder color will run a charge on the wrong curve. R-454C at 75 °F saturation reads about 206 psig, lower than R-410A. R-32 reads about 258 psig, higher. The five A2Ls that matter this year all curve differently, and the gap is widest at the saturation-temperatures that show up on a charged-but-tripped-out system in August.
Open the P/T lookup with R-454B preselected and the A2L only filter chip on. That gives you the curve for the field load today: R-32, R-454B, R-454C, R-1234yf, R-1234ze(E). Toggle the chip off to fall back to the A1 workhorses (R-410A, R-22, R-134a) when the service truck pulls up with a pink cylinder.

A2L diagnostics look like A1 diagnostics on a P/T gauge — but the refrigerant-specific safety notes differ. - Read the cylinder color before you read the gauge. Light-pink, light-salmon, red, light-red, purple — five different A2Ls on five different saturation curves.
- Leak-check with an A2L-rated detector; record the result on the customer's paperwork regardless of pass or fail.
- Keep the recovery cylinder on an A2L-only cylinder. Tag it with the refrigerant, the date, and the recovered mass.
- Confirm ignition-source clearance before sweating a joint in a closet, a crawlspace, or adjacent to a furnace.
- Charge against the OEM chart, not a generic refrigerant chart. The P/T lookup is a fast field reference; the OEM chart is the final authority.
- Log the service: refrigerant added, refrigerant recovered, leak-check pass, tech ID. Five lines; protects the customer and protects you.
